Open Position – ORNAMENTAL PLASTER MAKER

1. JOB DESCRIPTION

Using sheet metal templates, rubber molds, mixed gypsum plaster and reinforcing fibers, ASR plaster makers cast architectural and ornamental plaster products for direct sales, installations and restorations. These products include crown molding, cornices, domes, friezes, wall frames and plaques, medallions, coffer ceilings, brackets, pilaster capitals, pedestals, overdoors & cartouches, sconces, and characters & figures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

MAKE TEMPLATES

  • Makes templates from aluminum sheet metal cut full-scale from drawn profile with scroll saw in shapes to match existing plaster; mount the cut aluminum template on ¾ “ plywood, which is cut with scroll saw to match the aluminum sheet with brads.
  • Carefully file the sheet metal templates to remove any roughness or imperfections that could be transferred to the finished work.
  • Create plywood “sled” to use with template.

MIX PLASTER

  • Use USG plasters designed and manufactured for ornamental plaster work.
  • Weigh the plaster, and measure or weigh the water according to required specifications. Sift plaster into water evenly and without dropping handfuls or containers of plaster into the water at one time. Allow plaster to soak 2 minutes undisturbed, then mix thoroughly. Stir from bottom, forcing material to top. Carefully avoid beating air bubbles into the mix. Continue mixing until a smooth, even mass is produced and ready for use.

USE TEMPLATES AND URETHANE RUBBER MOLDS TO CREATE OR REPLICATE ORNAMENTAL PLASTER OBJECTS

  • Templates: Use a template with “sled” guided by the table edge to push the template through the gypsum mass located on a work table through as many runs as needed to form the finished product.
  • Rubber Molds: Fill the rubber mold with water and then pour all of the water out to moisten the walls to ensure that the plaster flows into all the mold’s crevices. Add properly mixed plaster and then cheesecloth, burlap, hemp or fiberglass strips for strength; jog the plaster-filled mold gently to nudge plaster into all the indentations. Level the plaster.
  • Plaster should be hard enough to remove from the mold in 30 minutes; Allow 24 hours to air dry before installing by placing or hanging the objects in the drying area.
  • Prepare plaster objects for pick up by direct sales customers and ASR installers.

 JOB AND SHOP INVENTORY

  • Keep track of and report on shop jobs and shop job progress.
  • Keep track of and maintain the inventory of materials and equipment used in the making of templates and ornamental plaster objects.

CLEANING

  • When replication and plasterwork is completed, remove, clean or store unused materials, containers and equipment.
  • Clean floors, table and bench surfaces of all plaster debris and fragments.
